1 Samuel 25: 19, ‘And she said unto her servants, Go on before me; behold, I come after you. But she told not her husband Nabal’.
Gossiping is most times associated with women. Quite frankly, it’s a conclusion that I have also come to. We talk too much. Not about things that can improve our lives, but idle talking which is even a sin in the Bible. In 2 Timothy 2: 16 the Bible says, ‘Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly’. It’s okay and normal to talk, but we should be able to discern what needs to be said and what need not be said.
Knowing the kind of man her husband was, it would have been unwise for Abigail to tell Nabal what she was doing. He most likely would have forbidden her from going, then it would have been another story today.
Now, she didn’t tell him because she wanted to keep a secret from him, no! Because it’s a marriage and both parties should be open with each other. She didn’t tell him because no matter how she put it to him then, he would have been unable to understand her rationale for wanting to do what she did.
Fast forward to Verse 36, ‘And Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken: wherefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light’.
It would have also been unwise to say anything to her husband at this point. But there was something about Abigail, she was truly a woman of good understanding. A lot of us pay no regard to the saying, ‘Patience is a virtue’, but it truly is. God knows what Nabal might have done in his state of drunkenness had Abigail come out to tell him what she had done then.
When he had become sober the next morning, she told him. Within the next 10 days, he died. Why, because his heart became as a stone. If you act like a stone, God will give you a heart of stone, but if you act like a proper human being, you’ll have a heart of flesh (Nowhere else in the Bible was a fleshy heart exchanged for a stony one, it’s usually the other way around Ezekiel 11:19). You can’t realize your wrong and repent with a heart of stone, you need a heart of flesh to be able to do that.
Pray today that God should not allow your heart change into stone because then, you won’t even have the opportunity to repent.
