Consequence

Remember how the devil succeeded in inducing Eve to eat the fruit from the forbidden tree in the Garden of Eden? Well, at that moment, we became doomed. God was absolutely livid. I mean, He had put Adam in the garden to simply do whatever he wanted; with the exception of one thing. Don’t eat the fruit from the tree in the centre of the garden. He even made him a babe; his own personal babe (no guy could even come and snatch her).

Let’s go back in time a little. In Genesis 1: 26 – 28; God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.’

In John 4: 24, the Bible says, ‘God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth’. Now, in Genesis 1: 26, it is recorded that man was made in the image of God. Therefore, A=B=C. God is a spirit, man was created in God’s image, man is a spirit.

Then God gave these spirit beings some very specific instructions. Be fruitful, multiply, replenish the earth, subdue it, have dominion. Sounds almost too good to be true. Just this. This should be doable. But nonetheless; we still fell. God basically told us to turn up; but being who we are, we had to go and do what we had been expressly told not to.

Man was a spirit but this world was a physical one. So in Genesis 2: 7, the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. The inner core being the spirit of man, the middle core being the soul of man and the outer core, the body made out of the dust of the earth. It was at this point that the man was put in the Garden of Eden; as a physical man. From what I get here, what this world can relate with is our physical bodies. Even when God the Son had to come down to rectify the situation, He had to come in a body. He was spirit alright, but to perform his mandate, he needed a body. In Matthew 10: 28 the Bible says, ‘and fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell’. So your body really is just cargo. The vessel through which you are manifested in the physical.

Creation had been concluded. All man was to do here on out was to be. The devil however was not having this. He was lonely and needed some company. So man had a choice to make. Either continue in God’s sufficiency or to become his own god and provide for himself.  Guess what he chose!! Well, yes, he decided to eat from the tree. Meanwhile, we had been operating under the spiritual law but when the act was done; there was a paradigm shift. A move from spiritual laws to physical laws.

In Genesis 3: 14 – 19, it’s no longer fun and games. God is pronouncing some really serious stuff on not only on Adam and Eve but on generations to come. Thus, man’s struggle begins. Struggle, sickness, sorrow, pain, male dominance etc. became the order of the day. Essentially, we messed up.

Lamentations 3: 22 – 23, ‘The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness’. And this is what it all boils down to, the mercy of God. Mercy said no, to the physical law that we had been condemned to.

God’s mercy personified is Jesus Christ. His death on Calvary was not just to prove he can wake up from the dead. The death of Christ is the reason we have an inheritance in God. This inheritance can only be claimed upon the fulfilment of certain conditions. Yes we had been condemned to pain, suffering, sorrow but Jesus came that we may have life and that we may have it more abundantly. By his death, God played the devil and bought us back. Once again, upon the fulfilment of one condition, we operate under the spiritual laws.

What is this condition? Some of us already know the answer but there are some who still do not. The simple condition is salvation. Salvation cleans up your old physical slate and gives you a new spiritual slate.

salvation

So as a Christian who has accepted the Lordship of Jesus over your life; you cannot keep on operating under the physical law. It’s like a waste of the sacrifice. Why operate at minimum utility when you can operate at maximum utility. As Christians, we ought to leave the physical living to the unsaved and enter into a realm of spiritual living. The things of the Spirit control the outcome of things in the physical. So, if we have a way to access this spiritual realm, why are so few of us open to the idea?
