Hearing Is Not Understanding

John 11: 27 – ‘She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world’.

John 11 talks about the death of Lazarus and how he was raised from the dead. Martha and Mary had sent word to Jesus that their brother was very sick, expecting Him to leave everything He was doing and come to them immediately. Jesus however had information that they didn’t. So even though, others were worried about the health of Lazarus, Jesus knew that there was no cause for alarm. This kind of peace is as a result of a knowing that only the Holy Spirit ministers. This is why as Christians, having a relationship with the Holy Spirit helps you react as you should and not as the world thinks you should.

Then Jesus eventually comes to see the sisters after the death of Lazarus. Martha who is first to come out to meet with Him is not sparing any words in expressing her dissatisfaction with Jesus. In verse 23, Jesus says, ‘your brother will be raised up’. But Martha is not listening. She is not receiving the intent of the message. She then goes on telling Jesus about how she knows he will be raised up at resurrection at the end of time.
Jesus, recognising the understanding deficiency tries to go a little deeper with what He is actually saying. Jesus in verses 25 – 26 says, ‘You don’t have to wait for the End. I am, right now, Resurrection and Life. The one who believes in me, even though he or she dies, will live. And everyone who lives believing in me does not ultimately die at all. Do you believe this’? (MSG)

You don’t have to wait till the end, you don’t have to wait till you see your brother in Heaven. The person who enables you to even get to heaven is right here, right now in front of you! And what does Martha say? I believe that thou art Christ the son of God. This is a good answer. But for the statement that Jesus had just made, this was a wrong answer. She didn’t allow herself to believe in the possibilities that having Jesus with you could wrought. She gave a textbook answer because though she had been friends with Christ, she had not spent time at His feet.

This is the story of many of us today. We know about Him, but we do not know Him. We have a form of godliness but we deny the power of God, thereby making Him powerless in our lives. Don’t be like Martha, get a correct understanding of God today.
