Smote Heart

1 Samuel 24: 5 – ‘And it came to pass afterward, that David’s heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul’s skirt’.

You may now begin to wonder why anybody’s conscience would begin to prick them for simply cutting off a piece of someone’s cloth when they could have killed the person altogether. The person after your life and success finally falls into your hands, albeit unknowingly. And all you do is just take some part of his clothes. But your actions still do not feel right, despite your intentions in cutting off the cloth.

David had cut off Saul’s skirt to enable Saul realize that he could have easily killed him the night before but he had chosen to spare Saul’s life. Trying to let Saul know that he was not his enemy. So Saul could stop acting against him.

How does this affect you? Whether at work, at church, at home wherever the place that you may have had an enemy at your mercy, what action did you take? Did you make sure the person knew that you were only sparing them so you could be the bigger person? Being the bigger person is not bad, but what are your intentions behind doing it?

Moreover, Saul had been anointed of God and the Bible in Psalm 105: 15 expressly says, ‘Touch not my anointed and do my prophet no harm’. David had touched God’s anointed. This is why his heart smote him, irrespective of all his good intentions in keeping Saul alive.

Some of us however have no problem gossiping about anointed men of God all day long, without feeling a tad bit guilty about our actions. Just using our words to tear them down. You have no business engaging in such.

Your heart can only smite you when you do any wrong thing of you have surrendered it to God completely.
