Truth be told, Christmas is my most favourite holiday in the whole wide world. I absolutely hate the harmattan though because now I have a cold and my chest hurts. No amount of harmattan can however dampen my Christmas spirit. Apparently, watching Christmas themed movies at any other time apart from Christmas is now a crime. Generally, I love movies but Christmas movies get me all kinds of excited, especially those I have seen. Then there is the food!!!! Wow…..feferity at its highest. The hamper struggle, strategizing how to pick out the best things from the hamper before my siblings even know one had been brought. Not forgetting the carols. Drools, I totally love music. The choir at my church does it justice.
A lot of the times though, we get a little bit (or a lot), carried away with all that’s happening outside that we forget what should be happening inside. We forget the reason for the season and only remember the holiday. We forget why the holiday started in the first place and focus on what marketers have turned it into. We forget the significance of the birth of Christ. For unto us was born this day, in the city of David, a Saviour which is Christ the Lord.
Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Jesus. Christmas is about acknowledging Gods’ sacrifice in sending his son to die for us. Christmas is about celebrating you salvation. It surpasses the hampers. It surpasses the movies and it most definitely surpasses all the food, drinks and presents.
The world received the greatest gift ever given on this day, yet the celebration is hardly ever about the Birthday Boy. A great number of us will throw massive tantrums if we were not in the least bit acknowledged on our birthdays.
As we celebrate the reason for the season this year, think deeply on the place of Jesus in your life now and the place you will want Him to occupy in 2016.
