Why Did Jesus Die?

Revelations 5: 12, ‘Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing’.

I realize that some people don’t even bother to open the book of Revelations. They have heard of the stories of doom for people who aren’t right with Christ and they’d rather just be in the dark.

However, apart from stories of unending suffering for sinners, the book of Revelation teaches a lot about praising God. The 70 elders recur in the book. They praise God day and night. Calling to remembrance His accomplishments.

The above verse may thus come as a shock to a lot of people. In our minds, all Jesus really came to do was give us salvation. The reason for this can be found in John 1: 29, ‘The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world’.

What we however forget, is that the Bible is not to be read in isolation. Every part is connected to the other. John spoke about the salvation significance of Jesus’ death and now Revelations is telling us about all the other things Jesus received upon His death.

And if Jesus, then us! Why? Because we are joint heirs with Christ. Romans 8: 17 says, ‘And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together’.

A lot of us are however not prepared to suffer with Christ. We want all the benefits, but we really aren’t ready to put in the work. The benefits are there for our enjoyment. Readily available, all you have to do is join Christ in his salvation ministry. Kinda like a Joint Venture Agreement.
